How it all Began

The story behind this design starts with a young family of five, who were looking for a new home located close to their longtime best friends (we know y’all! It is such a sweet story). They were thrilled when lo and behold, they not only found a property close by, but actually right next door! It was a dream come true for this family. It was their perfect location, and the house came with acreage- a wonderful setting for their 3 active young boys. However, there was a catch: the house on the property needed quite a bit more than a just a little updating- to make the house fit their family, it would require a full blow renovation of the entire house plus a sizeable addition.

So let’s talk about where we started. As you see in the image above, the original house on the property was a true single-story ranch, outfitted in the traditional style. Yes, we’re talking sunken living room, dark wood interior, small rooms, and that odd spiral staircase that was nowhere near up to code. Every part of this house needed to be redesigned, and one of the major aesthetic challenges was to also transform the exterior from a ranch style to a modern-farmhouse style house that the family had always dreamed of having. It was no small task, because this meant a complete facelift and redesign of the exterior of the home. We got to work and drew up a new exterior facade, a brand new porch and front entry, as well as a new roofline for the front of the house. Combined with crisp white paint on the exterior brick, the vision of their dream home started to come to life.

Changes in Elevation

Next to tackle was renovating the interior of the home. This included turning this one-story ranch into a true two-story home by adding an entire second floor. In order to bring this to reality, we designed a brand new, beautiful (and non-spiraled!) staircase. Then as we designed the rest of the second floor, we added two bedrooms and a large bathroom. This created vital space that made the home liveable, functional, and comfortable for the entire family.

The Lighter Side

Downstairs, a full redesign of the layout took place. It was important to continue the light, airy feel throughout every part of the home, and the design reflected this in every aspect possible. A beautiful, newly lofted entryway completely transformed the feel of the space from dark and small to a bright, open entry point that sets the tone for the entire home. The entry leads directly to a spacious living room, featuring a beautifully redesigned fireplace and surrounding built-ins. Light hardwoods throughout helped us accomplish the goal of a bright, beautiful space.

Room(s) for Living

The main floor redesign was extensive- there was so much to do! Every part of the space needed to be thoughtfully re-created to suit the needs of this busy family. The sprawling first floor renovation included transforming the master bedroom and bathroom, and designing a home office with beautiful, custom built-ins. With there being a lot of lightness and softer hues in the space, we had fun renovating the powder bath on the first floor by adding in some color and visual interest with a playful wallpaper. A gorgeous, light-filled kitchen was also top of the list. We brought in custom cabinetry, granite, and tile work for a beautiful, neutral tone-on-tone design.

A Completed Space

There was no space that was left untouched in this home. And, to provide the perfect finishing touch, we added a brand new deck and an incredible screened-in porch, complete with a rich in-laid wood ceiling, unique railings, and a custom gas fireplace. Indoor living would flow seamlessly to the outdoor space, especially in this gorgeous all-seasons porch.
