Congratulations to UNCSA's Kenan Institute!
We are celebrating the Grand Opening of the UNCSA Thomas S. Kenan Institute's Creative Community Lab today!Catherine French Design, LLC designed and installed this remarkable space for collaboration and arts enterprise in the heart of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Team CFD provided full-service interior design services which included designing, sourcing, and installing the decor throughout the 2,200 sq ft space. It was a pleasure working with Executive Director Corey Madden and the whole team at UNCSA's Kenan Institute. The design intent behind the Creative Community Lab was to provide a space for a variety of interactions. The large community table by the front door will comfortably seat 14 people and there is a custom bar table for standing height work adjacent to the front collaboration space. To highlight the historic brick and original wood beams of this former Rail Depot on the National Register of Historic Places, the palette in the front area played with various wood tones and pale gray walls.
The bold red of the Kenan Institute brand was highlighted in these fabulous chairs from West Elm in the front seating area. The accessories and area rug in this front space informed the color palette throughout the rest of the Creative Community Lab.
There are smaller offices in the front half of the space for the Kenan Institute Research Fellows. Norman Coates, one of the current artists in residence was interviewed in the Winston-Salem Journal. He says the following about the Creative Community Lab:
“I find it is a place where I can come and get a lot of work done in a nice, really peaceful environment,” said Coates, the director of lighting for the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. “I can immerse myself in what I’m doing without the distractions that come with being in an office in the middle of the university.”
