Color Punch: How To Tie Spaces Together
One of the questions I get asked a lot is "how do I tie these two separate spaces together?" The most fail-safe solution is to take one element from a space and introduce it to the other. In this post, that element is color.The trick is to figure out where to start. One of our clients, the Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts at UNCSA, has a fun, bold, orangey-red hued logo. I picked this color to launch their palette. On brand? Check. Fun color? Check. Perfect accent? Triple Check.
Accent Color
The key to having a such a saturated color as your accent is to make sure it stays an accent. These red chairs are the one-two color punch. And then the red carries through into some of the accessories throughout the entire space: in wall hooks, throw pillows, objects, etc.
Red is such an energetic hue, and needs a lot of neutral tones to pull off a balanced space. The main area in the Creative Community Lab has this gorgeous historic brick and large historic doors. Then a gray tone that has a moodier blue undertone really cuts the impact of the red and provides a nice balance. The room feels like it can breathe. And the red stays as an accent.
Color Punch
In the breakout room, the red chairs are again the tie from the main spaces. Here, the walls are a lovely green color, which inspires creativity and calm. Layers of wood tones and gray tones again provide that balance in the space. Further accentuating the height of these walls, we made custom string art with all of the hues found throughout the space. Again, another subtle nod to the more energetic tones in the main areas.
Design is in the details.
